Geographical Region: South Central Connecticut

Starting Location (city/town): Madison

Starting Location (detailed directions to): I-95 Exit 61 CPL (Rt. 79) in Madison

Ride Description: This is a nice short, flat ride recommended for hot summer days, or a relaxing meander along the shore. Very nice views of the Madison shoreline, following many of the coastal roads before entering Hammonassett State Beach Park. Only very short intervals on busier state roads, but there are a few places where you might want to dismount your bicycle for safety due to loose gravel access on short pathways. These are located at miles 4.4, 7.7 and mile 9.8. The Boat Launch access road at mile 4.4 has beautiful marsh views, but it can be skipped if road surface is undesirable. The access path at mile 7.7 takes you into the back side of The Madison Beach Club near where small boats are stored. A very short walk to the paved parking area. It can be bypassed by continuing on Rt. 1 at mile 6.7 and then turning on West Warf Rd. The access path at mile 9.8 can also be bypassed by continuing on Waterbury Ave, and turning right onto Liberty Street. In addition, the Greenway Trail at mile 10.2 has beautiful access to Hammonassett beaches, but trail surface is packed gravel with possible looser sandy points, so slow riding is recommended. The alternative to the Greenway Trail is to ride along Rt-1 for less than 1 mile to the Hammonassett Park Entrance. The Hammonassett Walking/Bike Path is a nicely paved surface allowing for scenic views all the way to Meigs Point. The bathrooms at all the Pavilions are seasonal. The return route also uses the Bike Path, but the Beach Access Road can be used as an alternative.
