2009 Half-Triathlon Ride (W. Pond Meadow Version)

Total Distance:  56.3 miles                        Elevation Gain:  2777 feet  

 

Degree of Difficulty Index:  2777 ft / 56.3 mi = 49.32 ft/mi        Terrain:  Rolling to Hilly

 

Killer Hills:  Difficult ¾ mile stretch on County Rd starting @ mile cue 13.1 (+/-); lengthy 2.5 mile climb on Beaver Meadow Rd starting at mile cue 26.5.

Starting Location (detailed directions to):  West Beach Parking lot in Hammonasset State Park in Madison; use I-95 Exit 62 and go south on the Hammonasset Connector to the TL; cross Rt. 1 @ the TL onto the access road into the park (there is a parking fee during the late spring, summer and early fall); continue past the toll booths to the rotary and follow signs to West Beach. 

 

Ride Description:  This is one of several routes that were developed for (possible) use during a 2009 Half Triathlon starting from Hammonasset SP.  It features some significantly hilly sections while traveling inland largely on back roads w/ a minimum of traffic thru No. Madison, Killingworth, Higganum & Haddam to the top of Beaver Meadow Rd. @ mile cue 29.0 --- at which point the route continues back into Killingworth, on to Chester, Westbrook and Clinton before returning to the starting point.  For recreational riders the route provides a challenging workout w/ interesting views of some up-scale neighborhoods as well as several sparsely populated and forested areas.
